About the House of Alijn

The House of Alijn is the museum of daily life.  Together with a diverse audience, we discover how people have lived, eaten, celebrated, loved and relaxed, from the early 20th century until now. Daily life - in the past, present and future - provokes conversation, encourages reflection and prompts meeting people.

The House of Alijn is located on a medieval site on Kraanlei in Ghent’s historical city centre.

MAIN EXHIBITION MUSEUM OF DAILY LIFE

On permanent display, this exhibition uses the calendar to show the important stages of life and our daily traditions, customs and rituals.

Hear the beans being ground in a coffee grinder. Recreate your first dance in the wedding room. Flick through photo albums or read an old New Year’s letter. Take a trip down memory lane in the museum of daily life. An interactive visit allows you to discover many recognisable objects, photos, sounds and videos from the 20th and 21st centuries. They provoke conversation about our traditions, rituals and customs in the past and the present.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS AND PUBLIC ACTIVITIES

Additionally, we organise temporary exhibitions and activities, both inside and outside the museum. In doing so, we focus on modernisation and diversity. Pierke van Alijn is the museum’s puppet theatre performing weekly on Saturdays and every day during the Ghent Festivities.

OUTREACHLAB - HERITAGE AND WELL-BEING

The aim of the outreachlab is to create an impact on the health and well-being of people, using the cultural heritage of daily life.

We develop methodologies and programmes that can be used in elderly care and offer support to health care practices. We do this for, but also together with partners from various sectors. This way, we can create a network of heritage and health care organisations.

We also have a collection library of objects that can be borrowed for welfare activities in the health care and social sectors.
