The bar as barricade

Queer nightlife in Ghent (1950–present)

For decades, nightlife has been a place to experiment with identity, gender, beauty and self-expression. In Ghent, LGBTQIA+ communities—and bars such as Paradox, B52 and Cherry Lane—created spaces to dance, experiment and be yourself.

During this guided walk, queer historian Jens takes you to some of the city’s most iconic nightlife spots. Through personal stories, testimonies and musical fragments, you’ll discover how the night brought people together and became a space where freedom could be experienced.

After the tour, you won’t just know where pavements were once washed with champagne—you’ll also gain insight into contemporary queer nightlife in Ghent. And every now and then, the story even continues on the dance floor…
