When the lights go out and the puppets appear on stage, that’s when the magic starts. In the exhibition “Lights out.  Puppet on”, the House of Alijn displays its special collection of theatre puppets from the 20th century until the present day.  What’s so special about puppetry?  How does a performance come about?  And what makes this heritage so valuable?  Discover the magical world of puppetry, on stage and behind the scenes.

A unique collection of theatre puppets

The House of Alijn shows part of its collection of theatre puppets in this temporary exhibition.

  • Theatre puppets of Pierke van Alijn and its predecessors Spelleke van Folklore and Spelleke van de Muide

  • Theatre puppets of Ghent’s Theater Taptoe, founded by Luk De Bruyker

  • Theatre puppets that were collected, used or made by the Contryn family of Mechelen, by staff members of the School for Puppetry and the puppet theatres Spelleke van Ulenspiegel and Hopla. Paul Contryn is still a resident artist with the theatre company DE MAAN.
