The exhibition MY MILITARY SERVICE tells the story of Belgian conscripts from their call-up to their discharge.
The exhibition MY MILITARY SERVICE tells the story of Belgian conscripts from their call-up to their discharge.
25 years ago, the last Belgian conscripts left the service. The decision to suspend military service in 1993 had a major impact. Since then, young men no longer need to take months-long military service into account. For previous generations, conscription meant a period of serving their country and community. It was a passage to adulthood.
The moment that an 18-year-old was called up to military service heralded the symbolic beginning of a new chapter in his life. Young men from all walks of life and all corners of the country ended up in the unknown world of the army. Discipline, uniformity, hierarchy and team spirit were considered of paramount importance. Away from their familiar surroundings, they tried to adapt to military life: foot drill, spud bashing, manoeuvres and guard duty.
