THE NEW HOUSE OF ALIJN

 ° 16.12.2017

Daily events and special occasions define the rhythm of our lives. Days turn into weeks, months into years. The new House of Alijn explores customs, traditions and rituals from the recent and distant past. From your first baby photos to your first heartbreak, from playing marbles in the playground to enjoying your yearly summer holidays, and from celebrating your retirement to parting with loved ones. How we deal with these moments and emotions evolves over time, both personally and universally. The museum takes you on a journey through a rich collection of objects, pictures, sound and movies. All of them show that daily life is far from ordinary.

TOURIST INFO

The Tourist Info is located on the Veerleplein, nearby Huis van Alijn.

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT

In Gent there are two main railway stations: Gent Sint-Pieters and Gent Dampoort. They are easily accessible from any city in Belgium. A lot of trains pass by Gent Sint-Pieters.

Gent Sint-Pieters: in front of the railway station, you take tram line 1, which takes you through the city centre. Stop at the Castle of the Counts. Having reached the Veerleplein, you turn to the right and follow the Kraanlei.

Gent-Dampoort: at the big roundabout (the platform is located under the viaduct), you take bus line 3 as far as the stop 'Sint-Jacobs - Vlasmarkt'. From that point, you walk to the Vrijdagmarkt and further in the direction of the old quarter Patershol. Go across the small bridge (Zuivelbrug) to the Kraanlei and follow it to the left.

TICKETS

Trains are operated by the Belgian Rail Company (NMBS). More information on tickets or buy online.

Busses and trams are operated by DE LIJN. Buying a ticket in advance is cheaper. You can buy single ticketscards that allow you to make up to 10 journeys or (multiple) day-passes. There are several pre-sale points in the NMBS-stations and on the bigger platforms. You can also buy a ticket via SMS if your parent operator is a Belgian one (more info).

The city centre is car-free. We strongly advice you to take the public transport and use the following Park & Ride Parkings:

If you do come by car, we advise you to use the updated apps Google Maps, Waze or OpenStreetMap. If you use a GPS system, make sure to update your tracking system to the latest version! As some systems aren't updated yet, we remind you that traffic signs overrule tracking systems. The city centre traffic has camera surveillance.

PARKING

The nearest parking is 'Vrijdagmarkt'. Coming from the E40 or the E17 you take the exit Gent-Centrum and you follow the P-route up to the ‘Parking Vrijdagmarkt’. Or you can use one of the P+R parkings mentioned above.

BY BOAT

Yes, we are also accessible by boat! The hop on hop off water-tramway sails every Saturday & Sunday from April 1st until November 1st. Stop at the Castle of the Counts. More info.

REDUCED MOBILITY

People with reduced mobility can use the free People Mover. These are electric buses who run around the pedestrianised city centre on a fixed route with 8 stops.

You are limited in your mobility and need to be dropped off at the entrance of the museum? No problem! The museum can hand out temporary permits to drive into the car-free zone of Ghent. Contact us for more info at info@huisvanalijn.be or T 0032 (9) 235 38 00. These permits only let you drive in the car-free zone, they do not give you the permission to park in the zone or drive through the fixed closed gateways.
