WHAT'S ON

THE NEW HOUSE OF ALIJN

The House of Alijn reopened on 16.12.2017. We give the visitors the first months the opportunity to completely dive into the new House of Alijn!

The new House of Alijn explores customs, traditions and rituals from the recent and distant past. From your first baby photos to your first heartbreak, from playing marbles in the playground to enjoying your yearly summer holidays, and from celebrating your retirement to parting with loved ones. How we deal with these moments and emotions evolves over time, both personally and universally.

EXHIBITION 'SMOKE'

Until 18th August 2019 (extended date)

The pungent scent of cigars, pipes dangling from mouths, colourful cigarette billboards sprucing up the street. All familiar memories that now seem strange in the context of today’s society. The Zeitgeist is no longer in the favour of smokers. The smoking ban has made it so that it’s hard to find a place where it’s still permitted to light up. Still, tobacco products remain in high demand, holding an unquestionable appeal to many. Behind today’s cigarette lies a fascinating history. The exhibition ROOK (‘SMOKE’) offers an insight into the change in mentality surrounding smoking and shows how and why we have come to see the activity differently. The many selected photos, home movies and objects in the exhibition bear witness to the significance of smoking in our daily lives, both now and in the past.
